Abstract:

The second law of thermodynamics states that changes within a closed system invariably involve an increase in entropy, moving towards thermal equilibrium. To maintain homeostasis, organisms must therefore acquire negative entropy from the external environment, as Schrödinger pointed out. According to Shannon’s information theory, entropy and information are equivalent. The nervous system contributes to homeostasis by processing information, but this information processing necessarily incurs an entropy cost accordig to Landauer’s principle. This can be calculated in terms of free energy, and it is thought that the nervous system evolved to minimise this cost. In this study, we attempted to re-evaluate the energy cost of the nervous system from the perspectives of thermodynamics and information theory.
